Salesforce AppExchange 101

Feb 08 · 4 min read

History of the Salesforce AppExchange

The AppExchange was introduced by Salesforce in 2005 because Salesforce wanted to offer additional 3rd party products and services to extend the core capabilities of Salesforce as a platform.

What is the Salesforce AppExchange?

You can think of AppExchange as the Salesforce Store. AppExchange is a robust enterprise marketplace providing cloud-computing apps, solutions, and consulting services.  In 2019, AppExchange had 7.5 million installs, 4,000+ solutions, and 90,000 reviews. Today, it is much larger as the Covid-19 pandemic accelerated digital transformation efforts in organizations worldwide.

How many apps are on the Salesforce AppExchange?

As of 2021, over 5,000 pre-built and customizable applications are available on the AppExchange.

How many Salesforce Customers use it?

At last count, 91% of Salesforce customers have installed at least one app from AppExchange. When you consider that Salesforce has over 150,000 customers worldwide, that 91% is a sizable number. In 2020, Salesforce hosted a virtual Dreamforce, which is typically targeted at Salesforce users and partners, and attracted more than 140 million views of the sessions.

Why do Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) use the Salesforce AppExchange?

Salesforce’s huge customer and user base make the AppExchange a rich environment for ISVs (Independent Software Vendors) to extend their product capabilities into a captive market. Salesforce PDOs (Product Development Outsourcers) are heavily involved in helping ISVs launch new products or extend an existing product into AppExchange. Interested in learning more about why you should consider using a PDO to help develop a product for AppExchange?  Please read this blog Why Use A Salesforce Product Development Outsourcer (PDO)?

What are the types of solutions offered on AppExchange?

According to Salesforce, “AppExchange offers apps, Components, Lightning Data, Bolt Solutions, Flow Solutions, consulting partners, and developers to help you extend the power of Salesforce. (Check out the details on all of the different types of solutions in the post, All of the Different AppExchange Solutions, Defined). All solutions are prescreened by Salesforce to reduce risk so you and your teams can start using it faster.”

Are there industry-specific solutions on AppExchange?

AppExchange has many ready-to-install industry-specific apps. You can find the right ones for your industry on the industry collection pages.  They are currently 12 available for the following industries:

  • Communications
  • Education
  • Financial Services
  • Government
  • Healthcare & Life Sciences
  • Manufacturing
  • Media
  • Nonprofits
  • Professional Services
  • Real Estate
  • Retail
  • Travel, Transportation, and Hospitality

Are AppExchange solutions mobile?

This is an important question as online engagement is increasingly moving to mobile devices.  AppExchange has many Salesforce mobile-ready solutions and many Salesforce PDOs can help ISVs build custom mobile solutions.

How do I get an AppExchange solution installed?

First, be sure to verify the requirements and test the functionality. You will need to review edition compatibility and the external services of each application. From there, you can try a test drive of the solution before installing to view the core functionality. If you like the functionality, you can then install the developer edition or sandbox to test it out in your environment. Once you are fully satisfied, you can install it into your production organization.
